What is it?
Freiberg's disease is a condition where part of the head of a metatarsal bone (usually the second) loses its blood supply and flattens. It most often affects teenagers and young women.
What causes it?
- Repeated stress on the bone.
- Changes in the blood supply to the bone.
Common symptoms
- Pain and swelling under the ball of the foot, near the second toe.
- Stiffness of the toe joint.
How is it diagnosed?
Diagnosis is by X-ray, with an MRI scan in early cases.
Things you can do now
- Wear stiff-soled or rocker-soled shoes
- Use an insole that offloads the ball of the foot
- Rest from high-impact sport
Treatment
Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, symptoms and goals. Depending on your situation, it may include rest, a stiff-soled shoe or insole, a period in a boot and surgery to tidy or reshape the joint for ongoing symptoms.
Mr Jeyaseelan will talk you through the options that are right for you at your consultation.
When to see a specialist
- Pain and swelling at the base of the second toe
- Stiffness in the toe joint
- Pain persists despite footwear changes
What to expect
Early cases often settle with rest and offloading. Surgery to tidy or reshape the joint helps those with ongoing pain.
