Hindfoot (subtalar) arthritis

Hindfoot arthritis affects the joints just below the ankle, including the subtalar joint.

What is it?

Hindfoot arthritis affects the joints just below the ankle, including the subtalar joint. These joints let the foot tilt from side to side, which helps you walk on uneven ground.

What causes it?

  • A previous heel bone or ankle fracture.
  • Long-standing flat feet.
  • Tarsal coalition.
  • Inflammatory arthritis.

Common symptoms

  • Pain below the ankle, often worse on slopes and uneven ground.
  • Stiffness when moving the foot from side to side.
  • Swelling.

How is it diagnosed?

Your surgeon will examine the foot and arrange X-rays. A CT or MRI scan, or an injection to identify the painful joint, may be used.

Things you can do now

  • Choose supportive boots or shoes that stabilise the ankle; a rocker sole can make walking smoother
  • Walk on level ground where possible
  • Use insoles to support the foot
  • Use simple pain relief as needed

Treatment

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, symptoms and goals. Depending on your situation, it may include supportive boots or a brace, insoles, pain relief, a guided steroid injection and fusion of the affected joints.

Mr Jeyaseelan will talk you through the options that are right for you at your consultation.

When to see a specialist

  • Pain below the ankle is worse on uneven ground
  • The heel is drifting out of line
  • Non-surgical treatment is no longer controlling your symptoms

What to expect

Bracing, insoles and injections help many people. When they no longer work, fusion of the affected joints gives reliable pain relief.
