Ankle fractures

An ankle fracture is a break in one or more of the bones that form the ankle joint.

What is it?

An ankle fracture is a break in one or more of the bones that form the ankle joint. Fractures range from simple breaks to more complex injuries where the joint is dislocated.

What causes it?

  • Twisting or rolling the ankle.
  • A fall or a direct blow.

Common symptoms

  • Sudden pain and swelling.
  • Bruising.
  • Difficulty or inability to put weight on the foot.
  • Sometimes a visible change in shape.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is by examination and X-rays. A CT scan is used for more complex fractures.

Things you can do now

  • Keep the leg raised to reduce swelling
  • Follow advice on how much weight to put through the foot
  • Keep your toes moving to help circulation
  • Don't smoke, as it slows bone healing

Treatment

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, symptoms and goals. Depending on your situation, it may include a boot or cast and surgery to fix the bones with plates and screws if the fracture is unstable.

Mr Jeyaseelan will talk you through the options that are right for you at your consultation.

When to see a specialist

  • You can't put weight on the foot after an injury, or it looks out of shape: go to A&E or an urgent treatment centre
  • Pain and swelling around the ankle after a fall or twist
  • Your cast or boot feels too tight, or your toes are numb or discoloured: seek urgent advice

What to expect

Most ankle fractures heal well, whether treated in a boot or with surgery. Recovery usually takes three to six months, and swelling can last up to a year.

If you cannot put weight on your foot after an injury, go to A&E or an urgent treatment centre.
