Heel bone (calcaneal) fractures

A calcaneal fracture is a break in the heel bone.

What is it?

A calcaneal fracture is a break in the heel bone. These fractures often extend into the joint below the ankle and can affect walking in the longer term.

What causes it?

  • A fall from height landing on the heel.
  • Road traffic accidents.

Common symptoms

  • Heel pain and swelling.
  • Bruising.
  • Inability to put weight on the foot.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is by X-rays and a CT scan.

Things you can do now

  • Keep the foot raised to reduce swelling
  • Follow advice on weight bearing
  • Don't smoke, as it slows healing

Treatment

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, symptoms and goals. Depending on your situation, it may include a boot with a period of non-weight bearing, surgery to restore the shape of the heel bone and fusion later for arthritis that develops after the injury.

Mr Jeyaseelan will talk you through the options that are right for you at your consultation.

When to see a specialist

  • Heel pain and swelling after a fall from height
  • Ongoing pain or difficulty with shoes after a heel fracture
  • You can't put weight on the foot after an injury, or it looks out of shape: go to A&E or an urgent treatment centre

What to expect

Heel fractures take months to recover from, and some people develop arthritis later. Treatment aims to restore the shape of the heel to reduce long-term problems.
