Ankle sprains & return to sport

An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments that support the ankle, most commonly on the outer side.

What is it?

An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments that support the ankle, most commonly on the outer side. Most heal well, but good rehabilitation is important to reduce the risk of further sprains.

What causes it?

  • Rolling the ankle inwards, often in sport or on uneven ground.

Common symptoms

  • Pain, swelling and bruising around the ankle.
  • Difficulty walking.
  • Ongoing weakness or giving way if healing is incomplete.

How is it diagnosed?

Your surgeon will examine the ankle and decide whether X-rays are needed to rule out a fracture. An MRI scan is used if symptoms persist.

Things you can do now

  • Protect, rest, ice and elevate the ankle for the first few days
  • Start gentle movement and weight bearing as pain allows
  • Begin balance exercises once you can walk comfortably
  • Return to sport gradually

Treatment

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, symptoms and goals. Depending on your situation, it may include early protection, then gradual movement and weight bearing, a brace, physiotherapy for strength and balance, a structured return to sport and surgery if ongoing instability develops.

Mr Jeyaseelan will talk you through the options that are right for you at your consultation.

When to see a specialist

  • You can't put weight on the ankle
  • Pain and swelling haven't improved after a week or two
  • The ankle keeps giving way after the sprain has healed

What to expect

Most sprains recover within six weeks with early movement and balance exercises. A few people develop ongoing instability that needs further treatment.
