Nerve entrapment in the foot

Several nerves pass through the foot and ankle and can become trapped or irritated, causing pain in a specific area.

What is it?

Several nerves pass through the foot and ankle and can become trapped or irritated, causing pain in a specific area. Examples include nerves on the top of the foot, the outer border of the foot and under the heel.

What causes it?

  • Tight shoes or laces.
  • Scar tissue after injury or surgery.
  • Ankle sprains.
  • A ganglion or other lump pressing on the nerve.

Common symptoms

  • Burning, tingling, numbness or electric-shock sensations.
  • Symptoms in the area supplied by the affected nerve.

How is it diagnosed?

Your surgeon will examine where the symptoms are coming from. Nerve tests, an ultrasound scan or a diagnostic injection may be used.

Things you can do now

  • Loosen or change the lacing pattern of your shoes
  • Avoid tight straps over the painful area
  • Use padding to reduce pressure

Treatment

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, symptoms and goals. Depending on your situation, it may include changes to footwear or lacing, padding, medicines for nerve pain, a guided injection and surgical release of the nerve.

Mr Jeyaseelan will talk you through the options that are right for you at your consultation.

When to see a specialist

  • Burning, tingling or numbness persists
  • Symptoms followed an injury or previous surgery
  • The pain is affecting your sleep or walking

What to expect

Many cases settle once the source of pressure is removed. A guided injection or surgical release helps when symptoms persist.
