Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the tibial nerve as it passes through a narrow tunnel behind the inner ankle bone.

What is it?

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the tibial nerve as it passes through a narrow tunnel behind the inner ankle bone. It is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist.

What causes it?

  • Flat feet.
  • Swelling after injury.
  • A cyst, ganglion or enlarged vein pressing on the nerve.
  • Diabetes.

Common symptoms

  • Burning, tingling or shooting pain in the sole of the foot, heel or toes.
  • Numbness.
  • Symptoms that are often worse after standing or at night.

How is it diagnosed?

Your surgeon will examine the nerve. Nerve conduction studies, and an MRI or ultrasound scan, can confirm the diagnosis and look for a cause.

Things you can do now

  • Avoid tight shoes and straps around the inside of the ankle
  • Try supportive insoles
  • Note when the tingling or burning happens

Treatment

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, symptoms and goals. Depending on your situation, it may include changes to footwear and insoles, changes to activity, medicines for nerve pain, a guided steroid injection and surgery to release the nerve.

Mr Jeyaseelan will talk you through the options that are right for you at your consultation.

When to see a specialist

  • Burning, tingling or numbness in the sole of the foot persists
  • Symptoms are worse at night or after standing
  • There is weakness in the foot

What to expect

Many people improve with footwear changes, insoles and medicines for nerve pain. Surgery to release the nerve can help when there is a clear cause of pressure.
