Plantar fibromatosis

Plantar fibromatosis (also called Ledderhose disease) causes firm, slow-growing nodules in the plantar fascia, the tissue that runs along the arch of the foot.

What is it?

Plantar fibromatosis (also called Ledderhose disease) causes firm, slow-growing nodules in the plantar fascia, the tissue that runs along the arch of the foot. The nodules are not cancerous.

What causes it?

  • The exact cause is not known. It sometimes runs in families and is linked to Dupuytren's disease of the hand.

Common symptoms

  • One or more firm lumps in the arch of the foot.
  • Discomfort when walking or standing as the lumps grow.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is by examination, often confirmed with an ultrasound or MRI scan.

Things you can do now

  • Use soft insoles with cut-outs to take pressure off the lumps
  • Choose cushioned footwear
  • Avoid pressing or massaging the lumps hard

Treatment

Treatment is tailored to your individual needs, symptoms and goals. Depending on your situation, it may include soft insoles with cut-outs to offload the lumps, changes to footwear, injections and surgery in selected cases, as the condition can come back.

Mr Jeyaseelan will talk you through the options that are right for you at your consultation.

When to see a specialist

  • Firm lumps in the arch of the foot are painful or growing
  • They are affecting your walking
  • You are unsure what a lump is

What to expect

Plantar fibromatosis is not cancerous and often causes few problems. Offloading insoles help most people, and surgery is reserved for selected cases because the lumps can return.
