Special interest

Total ankle replacement.

For advanced ankle arthritis, a replacement can relieve pain while keeping movement in the joint. Mr Jeyaseelan trained with the design surgeons of a widely used ankle replacement during his Vancouver fellowship.

  • A full assessment of alignment, bone quality and activity
  • Replacement and fusion compared honestly for your ankle
  • Revision surgery for previous ankle replacements

He lectures widely on trauma: as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, as module lead for open fractures on its trauma MSc, and as faculty on advanced foot and ankle trauma courses.

Where can I see a foot and ankle surgeon in London?

Mr Jeyaseelan sees private patients at Align Orthopaedics on Harley Street, The London Clinic on Devonshire Place, HCA London Bridge Hospital, HCA UK at The Shard, HCA UK City of London on Old Broad Street and The Holly Hospital in Buckhurst Hill, Essex. His NHS practice is at The Royal London Hospital/Bone & Joint Health at Barts Health NHS Trust.

How do I choose a foot and ankle surgeon in London?

Look for a consultant orthopaedic surgeon on the GMC specialist register who specialises only in the foot and ankle, with fellowship training and membership of the British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (BOFAS). Check verified patient reviews, ask how often they perform your operation, and make sure they are recognised by your insurer. Mr Jeyaseelan is an internationally fellowship-trained consultant foot and ankle surgeon (GMC 6164291), a BOFAS member, rated excellent by patients on Doctify and recognised by major insurers.

What does a foot and ankle surgeon treat?

A foot and ankle surgeon is an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises only in the foot and ankle. Mr Jeyaseelan treats all foot and ankle problems, including bunions, big toe arthritis, ankle arthritis, ankle instability, Achilles and heel pain, flat and high-arched feet, sports injuries, fractures and complex deformity, with both non-surgical and surgical treatment. See all conditions.

How much does a private foot and ankle consultation cost?

New consultations start from £300 and follow-ups from £200, depending on the hospital. Mr Jeyaseelan is recognised by major insurers including Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, Vitality and WPA. Surgical costs are quoted as a fixed-price package after your consultation.

Do I need a GP referral?

Self-funding patients can book directly, though a GP letter is helpful. Most insurers need a referral before they authorise your consultation.

Am I a candidate for ankle replacement?

Ankle replacement can help people with advanced ankle arthritis whose pain no longer responds to non-surgical treatment. Whether it suits you depends on your ankle's alignment, bone quality and activity level, which we assess together.

Will I need an operation?

Not necessarily. Many foot and ankle problems settle with non-surgical treatment, and surgery is recommended only when it is likely to help.

How long is recovery after foot surgery?

It depends on the operation. Many forefoot procedures need about six weeks in a special shoe, with full recovery over several months. You'll get a personal recovery plan.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring your GP or referral letter if you have one, your insurer's details and authorisation code if you're insured, any recent X-rays, scans or reports, a list of your medicines, and the shoes you wear most. Wear or bring shorts or loose trousers so both legs can be examined.

Can I get a second opinion?

Yes. Mr Jeyaseelan regularly sees patients who have been advised to have surgery, whose previous surgery hasn't worked, or who are unsure about a diagnosis. Please bring your previous letters, operation notes and scans. You'll get an independent view of all your options, in writing.

Can I have a video consultation?

Yes. Video and telephone appointments are available for follow-ups and some first consultations.
